Ghirardelli Triple Chocolate Brownie Mix

I was going to leave this article at that, but I guess I should go into a bit more detail.

Costco imports a number of items for their Australian stores directly from, what I assume, are items stock in their warehouse stores in the USA. This has got to be one of the best of those imports.

Each multi-batch box has 6 batches of Ghirardelli’s Triple Chocolate Brownie mixture for a total of 3.4kg of brownie mix (about 570grams per batch) and costs $12.89. That’s $2.15 per batch. Given that each batch requires 1/3 cup of vegetable oil, 1/3 cup water and 1 egg to make this is a great product at a great price, especially given similar name brand brownie mixtures will cost you around the $5-$6 mark at Woolworths and Coles.

This stuff is bake-at-home brownie heaven and, so long as you follow the instruction correctly, is possibly on of the best chocolate brownies you will eat in my opinion. There are three kinds of chocolate chips in the mixture from sweet milk chocolate to bitter dark chocolate (but none of that white chocolate…that’s not really chocolate, is it?). The brownie itself is rich, moist and dense. You won’t want to stop at one square even your diet demands it.

As I mentioned, you do have to follow the instruction closely. We have made a few mistakes over the six or eight batches (single and double batches) we have made.

Firstly, do not use any electric mixer to mix this stuff. The packet says to do it by hand and there is a reason for that. The batter needs to be rough and a bit uneven in homogeneity for it to finish as a nice, dense brownie. Mixing with an electric mixer makes it a bit too much like an overdone sponge cake.

The second tip is to try and use a brownie tin that doesn’t spread the mixture too thinly. It just doesn’t quite come out right if it is too thin, but a bit too thick works out fine with a little extra cooking time.

Finally, stick to the cooking time on the box and don’t over cook the brownie. Putting a skewer in it may come out with undercooked batter on it but the brownie will continue to cook through after you take it out of the oven and it cools. Oh, and 375 degrees Farenheit is 190 degrees Celcius. Costco should note that on the label the add to the box for the Australian market.

Actually, the real final tip….ENJOY!
