Data for week 4 of the ‘Massive Costco Australia Comparison’ has been gathered and been tabulated. Here are the numbers from Week 4 (22nd January to 28th January 2014):

Fruit and Vegetable

Compared to Coles

  • Coles was 15% more expensive than Costco on average.
  • Coles had better prices on 7 of the 12 lines compared. Of those 5 were noted as sale items.
  • Coles had no lines on special that was more expensive than Costco.

Compared to Woolworths

  • Woolworths was 21% more expensive than Costco on average.
  • Woolworths had better prices on 3 of the 12 lines compared. None were noted as sale items.

Meat, Poultry and Seafood

Compared to Coles

  • Coles was 26% more expensive than Costco on average.
  • Coles did not have better prices on any of the 12 lines compared.

Compared to Woolworths

  • Woolworths was 16% more expensive than Costco on average.
  • Woolworths had a better price on 2 of the 12 lines compared. Both were noted as a sale items.
  • Woolworths had no lines on special that was more expensive than Costco.

Other Grocery

Compared to Coles

  • Coles was 37% more expensive than Costco on average.
  • Coles had better prices on 7 of the 64 lines compared. Of those 4 were on special.
  • Coles had 9 lines on special that were more expensive than Costco.

Compared to Woolworths

  • Woolworths was 29% more expensive than Costco on average.
  • Woolworths had better prices on 9 of the 64 lines compared. Of those 6 were on special.
  • Woolworths had 21 lines on special that were more expensive than Costco.

Liquor

Compared to First Choice Liquor (only 6 lines compared due to data availability)

  • First Choice was 14% more expensive than Costco on average.
  • First Choice did not have better prices on any of the 6 lines compared.

Compared to Dan Murphy’s

  • Dan Murphy’s was 10% more expensive than Costco on average.
  • Dan Murphy’s had better prices on 1 of the 8 lines compared. That line was not noted as on special.

    They have had their attack dogs on ACA pull a repeat the of the exact same hatchet job with the exact same talking heads less than 6 months ago.

    Utterly disgraceful.

  2. One thing that I have noted is that you do not say what you are buying. I do not think that you can do a fair comparison if people do not know what you are comparing to. Is it the same things or different things in those categories?

      The full list and data will be published soon. I did not want to show which products I was comparing just in case any of the retailers being tested tried to manipulate the results. I am hoping to analyse the data and provide a full report within the next two weeks.
