This week I am trialling a new article that I want to run with here on Loaded Trolley. I am always curious to see if I have saved money with Costco. My intent is to check the price of the grocery items I buy against the prices Coles and Woolworths are reporting online. Given this week was a light shop at Costco for me, it should be an easy first test.
Here is what I bought at Costco:
- Kleenex Cottonelle 180 sheet rolls – 60 rolls = $21.49 – Note: on sale, saving of $3 per 60 roll pack
- Cos lettuce hearts – 6 heads = $6.49
- Light Milk (2%) – 3 litres = $2.88
- Birds Eye Potato Gems – 2kg = $6.29
- Cape Mentelle Marmaduke Shiraz (750ml) – 1 bottle – $13.99
Looking at Coles Online, the best prices for thes items are:
- Kleenex Cottonelle 180 sheet rolls – 12 rolls = $4.50 – Note: on special, normally $9.97
- Cos lettuce hearts – 1 head = $2.00 – Note: whole cos, not heart
- Light Milk (2%) – 3 litres = $3.00
- Birds Eye Potato Gems – 1kg = $4.33
And on Woolworths’ website, their best prices for these grocery items are:
- Kleenex Cottonelle 180 sheet rolls – 16 rolls = $8.00 – Note: on special – 2 x 8 packs for $8, normally $7.18 for 1 pack
- Cos lettuce hearts – 2 heads = $2.98
- Light Milk (2%) – 3 litres = $3.00
- Birds Eye Potato Gems – 1kg = $4.29
The other item not available at Coles or Woolworths that I wanted to compare was the bottle of wine. Surpisingly Dan Murphys does not stock this Cape Mentelle line, however 1st Choice Liquor does have it. The price they show online for this is:
- Cape Mentelle Marmaduke Shiraz 750ml – 1 bottle = $15.00 – Note: $14.25 in a mixed dozen
So breaking this down to unit prices we find:

Costco won on all fronts of my grocery shopping this week. And added to that I picked up a bottle of the ready-to-drink Kirkland Signature Margherita Mix for $24.99 on special this week which is $6.50 off the normal price. That is great value for a product I really enjoy on those hot, lazy summer Sunday afternoons. We might have to whip up a batch of fajitas to go with it…cheers!
Please keep this comparison going, i would like to see you maintain all the data in a spreadsheet. i am particularly interested in comparisons when coles and woolworths have items on special, and how often these items are on special
Hi Aaron…thanks for your feedback. We will be continuing the regular comparisons of our own grocery shops (one will be up in the next day or so) as well as doing any shopping baskets that people submit via the contact page. I will consider keeping the data in a spreadsheet, but I will have to consider the best way to present this given that both the supermarkets’ and Costco’s prices change regularly.
