Sugar – Costco Versus

MMMM. Sweet, sweet sugar. OK, enough of the Homer Simpson moment.

Sugar is one of those items that are in most peoples pantry, but it is not at the forefront of the supermarket wars. I assume this is because the volume is not as great as something like milk or bread. Nonetheless, sugar is one of those items that has the potential to be cheap when bought in bulk lots. So next time you are buying a few kilos of sweet white stuff, consider this price comparison table.

Sugar – Cost per unit (kg)
Store Price QTY or weight Unit Price
Costco $2.79 3 $0.93
Coles $2.79 2 $1.40
Woolworths $2.89 3 $0.96
Aldi $1.99 2 $1.00

Costco has the cheapest price per kilo with Woolworths and Aldi not far behind. What interested me the most was the fact that Coles was a long way behind the market.

Now that brings me to the question of quality. Now some of you may be saying sugar is sugar, but I am not convinced. The prices above were for ‘Sunshine’ brand at Costco, the Coles house brand, ‘Homebrand’ at Woolworths and ‘Merryfield’ brand at Aldi. In our household we have used the brands from Costco, Woolworths and Coles. The quality of the Costco and Coles brand were great, as good as the other name brands like CSR. But the Woolworths Homebrand sugar had an unusual flakey element amongst the typical sugar grains. I don’t know if that makes a difference to anything, but it just didn’t seem right. I’d like to hear other opinions on the quality of these brands of sugar, especially the Merryfield from Aldi.
